The Vale and the Forest
The Vale and the Forest started as a collection of observations produced in the locality of Shirehampton,
in northwest Bristol. These monochromatic renderings were initially intended as an honest document that sought
beauty in the real. Careful sequencing allowed a visual poem to emerge that articulates nature’s fraught existence
in the milieu of a built up human environment.
Magnolia is an ancient symbol of springtime that cyclically recurs. This representation of natural growth and renewal is
depicted alongside human evidence such as a crushed plastic bottle on a forest floor, pollution from the local car wash,
an abandoned plant nursery, a crashed car and spilt baby milk amongst other subjects.
